Section titled “Welcome to the All Voices Educator Community!”

We made this page specifically for educators and tutors working with English language learners (ELLs). Here, you’ll find valuable resources we’ve put together to help you better understand ELLs and support their learning journey through our comprehensive training materials and teaching resources.

English Language Learner (ELL) is an abbreviation for adults who are actively learning the English language. This could be for various reasons, such as improving job prospects, seeking access to educational opportunities, or enhancing social and cultural interactions in an English-speaking environment.

Important: ELLs are not a monolith! Each learner brings unique experiences, backgrounds, and goals to their language learning journey.

  • ESL Students (English as a Second Language) - Used in educational settings for students learning English in addition to their native language
  • LEP Students (Limited English Proficient) - Used in legal and policy contexts
  • ELs (English Learners) - A more inclusive contemporary term that acknowledges the learning process without implying a deficit
  • Multilingual Learners - Emphasizes linguistic diversity and multilingual abilities
  • Emergent Bilingual - Highlights developing bilingualism and values native language as an asset
